Jumping straight into an investigation isn’t always the best first step. Forensic Investigator Stacey Voss shares smart, practical steps for organisations when allegations of workplace misconduct arise.
- Start With a Clear Assessment: Has there been a policy or legal breach? Or is it a matter better resolved through HR or grievance channels? Understanding the nature of the issue helps determine whether an investigation is necessary.
- Consider Independence: If an investigation is required, think about who should conduct it. Outsourcing to a third party can help maintain objectivity and credibility.
- Be Thorough and Forensic: Effective investigations require a clear understanding of the allegation, avenues of inquiry, and the evidence at hand. Stacey highlights the importance of collecting and handling evidence in a way that stands up to legal scrutiny.
- Expect the Unexpected: Investigations often start small but can quickly uncover broader issues, sometimes leading to disciplinary action or law enforcement referrals.
- Support All Parties: While uncovering the truth is critical, disproving false allegations can be just as valuable. “It’s a stressful time for everyone involved,” says Stacey. “Helping clients find closure, whether through evidence of wrongdoing or none at all, is incredibly rewarding.”
