About William
William Nolan is the co-leader of the Financial Services practice, where he focuses on working with senior management, lenders and other stakeholders in business turnarounds and restructurings. Mr. Nolan has close to 40 years of financial consulting and management experience and is one of the firm’s leading experts on the restructuring of financial services companies.
Mr. Nolan has experience assisting senior management teams and various stakeholders in developing and implementing restructuring and turnaround plans, stabilizing operations and developing liquidity forecasts. He is also an expert at identifying and addressing underperforming operations, sourcing new debt, managing dispositions of non-core operations, preparing for Chapter 11 filings and guiding companies through the bankruptcy process. Additionally, Mr. Nolan’s experience extends to interim management roles, acting as a chief restructuring officer and a chief liquidation officer and serving as a member on boards of directors.
Prior to its acquisition by FTI Consulting, Mr. Nolan served as a partner in the U.S. division of PwC’s Business Recovery Services group. During his time with PwC, he spent several years as a senior manager in the company’s UK Insolvency practice.
Mr. Nolan has extensive experience working with residential mortgage companies, including Alliance Mortgage; American Business Financial Services; Conti-Financial Corporation; Credit-Based Asset Servicing and Securitization (“C-BASS”); Ditech; Fidelity Bond and Mortgage; First Alliance Mortgage Company; First NLC; Franklin Credit, United Mortgage and Loan; Gateway Mortgage; Impac Mortgage; Mortgage Corporation of America; Mortgage Lenders Network; Ocwen Financial; People’s Choice Mortgage; ResMae Mortgage Corporation; Sterns Lending; United Companies; Walter Investment Management; and others. Mr. Nolan has been involved in the restructuring of some of the nation’s largest real estate and real estate finance companies, a sample of which includes Criimi Mae; Dancing Bear Aspen; Eagle Hospitality; Erickson Retirement Communities; Escapes; Innkeepers USA; LNR Partners; Oakwood Homes; Orleans Homebuilders; Pennsylvania Real Estate Trust; Rohrig Investments, LP; South Edge Inspirada; Transwest Resort Properties; Ultimate Extended Stay America; VREP LLC; and Westgate Resorts.
Relevant Experience:
- Engaged as lead financial advisor by seven different large mortgage real estate investment trusts (“mREITs”) that were reeling due to the pandemic-induced shut down; these companies represented almost $100 billion in mortgage and mortgage-related investments; involvement included guiding clients through the crisis and successfully reaching standstills and longer-term amendments; avoided potential shutdowns and liquidations
- Acted as the lead financial advisor in the financial and operational restructuring of Residential Capital (“ResCap”), one of the United States’ largest residential mortgage originators and servicers at the time
- Acted as the restructuring advisor to the Chapter 11 Trustee of MF Global, a large international broker dealer specializing in financial derivatives and commodities
