About Michael
Michael Katzenstein is Leader of the Interim Management practice, specializing in in-court and out-of-court restructurings. Mr. Katzenstein has decades of M&A and cross-border restructuring experience and is called upon to advise in many of the largest and most complex situations.
Mr. Katzenstein has led engagements for public and private companies across industries, including traditional and new media, entertainment, telecom, software and hardware. He has also worked with clients in the aerospace and defense, technology, ad-tech, ed-tech, bio-tech and bio-synthesis and other subscriber-based businesses and investment funds and international fund liquidations.
Mr. Katzenstein is regularly called upon to lead and assist in implementing strategies for companies in financial or operating distress or transition. He has led capital raising and M&A efforts for dozens of companies, and his clients include large and upper-middle corporations, as well as many major financial institutions and hedge funds.
Mr. Katzenstein has served on many occasions as a consulting or testifying witness on industry and corporate governance issues and has significant testimony experience, including in his capacity as Chief Restructuring Officer (“CRO”) or financial advisor in restructuring proceedings. He began his career as a M&A and securities lawyer and was a partner at a New York law firm.
Relevant Experience:
- Served as CRO of Zohar Funds, a Cayman-based investment fund; Global Cloud Xchange, a global data communications service provider; and Digital Domain, a special effects and media company
- Served as Chapter 11 financial advisor to OneWeb, a global satellite operator; Internap, a data services provider; National CineMedia, a movie advertising network; and Fusion Telecom, a telecom services company
- Served as Chapter 11 and Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act (“CCAA”) financial advisor to Nortel’s $4 billion cross-border bondholders
- Served as financial advisor to the Official Committee of Creditors for Amyris, a bio-synthesis company; M*Modal, a medical transcription business; and Nextel International, an international telecommunications company
- Served as Chapter 11 advisor to Synergy Pharmaceuticals, a specialty drug company; and Audacy, a radio and streaming conglomerate
- Served as Chapter 11 trustee for Paniolo Cable, a subsea telecom operator
- Served as both CRO and Interim CEO for SFX Entertainment, a global live events enterprise; and GSI Group (now “Novanta”), a global photonics and precision-based equipment and systems company
- Served as Chairman of the Board of Directors at Caribbean Asset Holdings, a telecommunications services company
- Served as Chairman of the Board of Directors and member of the executive and audit committees at RCN Corporation, a regional provider of cable and internet services
- Served on the Board of Directors and audit committee at Sun-Times Media Group, the owner and operator of more than 30 newspaper titles in the greater Chicago market; served as Post-Effective Liquidating Trustee for the Sun-Times estate
- Served as monitor for the benefit of claimant trusts in the first St. Vincent’s hospital restructuring
