About Michael
Michael Graser has 20 years of experience in the valuation of businesses, the valuation of intangibles and in quantifying damages. Across his career, Michael has led or participated in the preparation of expert reports in more than 300 valuation projects, on both contentious and noncontentious matters. As a publicly appointed and sworn expert for business valuation and the valuation of intangible assets, Michael regularly prepares expert opinions for clients and courts. He has advised listed companies, family holdings and private equity funds regarding businesses in all stages of a corporate life cycle — from startup to distressed — and across a broad range of industries, IP-driven business models in particular. Michael has a keen interest in matters involving life sciences, healthcare and software.
Michael advises in noncontentious cases by performing business valuation in the context of corporate transactions, including squeeze-outs and Domination and Profit and Loss Transfer Agreements (“DPLAs”); fiscal or legal reorganizations; accounting; taxation; or corporate governance issues (e.g. fairness opinions). For German valuation purposes, he regularly performs valuations in accordance with the German valuation standard IDW S1.
Michael’s valuation expertise also includes the valuation of intangible assets, such as trademarks, know-how, patents and software. Additionally, he is experienced in licensing and the calculation of reasonable royalties. Throughout his career, Michael has assisted his clients in assessing the value of technologies, brands, single IP rights or portfolios for various purposes, such as sales, licensing, collateral for loans and financial statement disclosure.
Michael has particular experience in complex commercial and intellectual property disputes, with a focus on shareholder disputes and patent infringement. He has directed litigation engagements involving breach of contract, auditor liability and antitrust issues. In addition, Michael assists clients and attorneys throughout all phases of the litigation life cycle, including advising on and supporting pre- and early-litigation assessments. He has also been appointed as an expert and has led the preparation of expert reports in proceedings before German courts (Landgerichte and Oberlandesgerichte).
Prior to joining FTI Consulting, Michael was a Managing Director at VALNES Corporate Finance, a specialized valuation boutique. His previous experience includes working in the corporate finance segment of a Magic Circle law firm and in the investment banking department of Sal. Oppenheim. Before attending business school, Michael worked on Deutsche Bank’s Corporate & Investment banking team.
