About Brett
Brett Harrison has more than 30 years of experience assisting clients with technology-related aspects of investigations, including a focus on digital forensics, cybersecurity, mobile device forensics and cloud forensics. Bringing his expertise to bear in the courtroom, Mr. Harrison has provided expert testimony in more than 20 civil and criminal matters, with his first appearance as a testifying expert in 1994.
Mr. Harrison’s clients often include large, multinational companies across healthcare, financial services, mining, manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, private equity and other industries. His work primarily focuses on leading complex, in-depth digital forensic examinations of desktop computers, laptops, mobile devices such as iPhones and Android devices, as well as cloud-based data sources such as Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, Slack and Box. He regularly provides consulting and digital forensic examination for a wide range of large e-discovery efforts, including for many intellectual property (“IP”) theft disputes, and provides bespoke digital forensic analyses related to internal and government investigations. He regularly assists clients through all phases of investigations, helping them understand options when responding to government subpoenas and data requests from opposing parties.
Mr. Harrison has testified in support of civil spoliation motions as well as on topics such as digital forensics, proper e-discovery procedures, the adequacy of efforts undertaken by opposing parties and topics related to the theft of IP and trade secret information.
Prior to joining FTI Technology, Mr. Harrison was employed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (“FBI”) at its headquarter locations in Virginia and Maryland. During much of his 15-year FBI career, he worked as an FBI Headquarters Supervisor on digital forensic programs and projects. Mr. Harrison worked on hundreds of cases as a Forensic Examiner of computers and of other devices, such as bomb detonators and personal digital assistants. He assisted in the drafting of portions of the FBI’s standard operating procedures related to digital forensic processing. Also during his tenure with the FBI, Mr. Harrison developed and presented several computer forensic training courses. The courses educated the FBI’s computer forensic examiners in areas related to the preservation and processing of both routine computer systems and complicated RAID storage systems, as well as the preservation and processing of UNIX based computer systems. He has lectured students at John Hopkins University regarding topics related to computer forensics.
Since joining FTI Technology, Mr. Harrison has presented lectures or participated on panel discussions at the Cybercrime Summit in Atlanta, the American Bar Association’s National Institute on Computing and the Law in both San Francisco and in Washington, D.C. and has spoken at the Maryland State Bar Association’s Annual conference.
Relevant Experience:
- Served on the FBI’s Computer Analysis Response Team (“CART”) Unit at FBI Headquarters responsible for the forensic acquisition and examination of computers and computer-related media
- Worked as the FBI’s Forensic Networks Program Manager to acquire and deploy enterprise level forensic network storage and review systems across the FBI; this was accomplished by designing, certifying, acquiring and deploying specialized computer network systems to twenty-five FBI locations
- Served as the FBI CART Unit’s UNIX Program Manager, ensuring the FBI’s 400+ computer forensic examiners had the necessary knowledge, skills and tools required to perform forensic examinations of UNIX-related media
